Basement Hopper Windows FAQs
My Evanston basement window is painted shut and won't open. Is replacement the answer?
Usually, yes. Once an old steel or wood sash is painted shut and rusted, it's not worth trying to free up, and it wasn't sealing well anyway. A new hopper tilts open cleanly to vent the basement and locks flush when shut, so you get both airflow and a tight seal back.
What is a hopper window?
A window hinged at the bottom that tilts inward at the top to open. It’s the standard style for basement and other small below-grade openings.
Do hopper windows keep water out?
When closed they seal tight against the frame. We also flash the opening properly so wind-driven rain and ground moisture stay outside.
Can hopper windows be an egress exit?
Standard hoppers are usually too small for egress. If you need a code-compliant basement egress window, we can spec one — just ask at the consultation.
