Basement Hopper Windows FAQs
We're finishing a lower level in our Indian Hill home. Do we need egress windows or will hoppers do?
It depends on how the space is used. For general venting and light, hoppers are the right fit for those short openings. But if you're adding a bedroom, code requires a proper egress window, and we can spec and install a code-compliant one alongside the hoppers in the rest of the basement.
What is a hopper window?
A window hinged at the bottom that tilts inward at the top to open. It’s the standard style for basement and other small below-grade openings.
Do hopper windows keep water out?
When closed they seal tight against the frame. We also flash the opening properly so wind-driven rain and ground moisture stay outside.
Can hopper windows be an egress exit?
Standard hoppers are usually too small for egress. If you need a code-compliant basement egress window, we can spec one — just ask at the consultation.
