Basement Hopper Windows FAQs
I finished my Mason basement into a bedroom. Does a standard hopper meet code down there?
Usually not on its own. A standard hopper is typically too small to count as emergency egress, which a basement bedroom requires. We can spec and install a code-compliant egress window for the sleeping area and use hoppers for the rest of the openings, and we'll walk the basement with you to sort out which is which.
What is a hopper window?
A window hinged at the bottom that tilts inward at the top to open. It’s the standard style for basement and other small below-grade openings.
Do hopper windows keep water out?
When closed they seal tight against the frame. We also flash the opening properly so wind-driven rain and ground moisture stay outside.
Can hopper windows be an egress exit?
Standard hoppers are usually too small for egress. If you need a code-compliant basement egress window, we can spec one — just ask at the consultation.
