Basement Hopper Windows FAQs
The wind off the ridge really works on our Mount Airy basement windows. Will a hopper stay sealed?
It will. The multi-point lock draws the sash into a full weatherstrip on every side, so there's no loose edge for the wind to catch the way it does with an old rusted steel unit. The stiff, welded vinyl frame doesn't flex, which is what keeps the seal tight up on the hill.
What is a hopper window?
A window hinged at the bottom that tilts inward at the top to open. It’s the standard style for basement and other small below-grade openings.
Do hopper windows keep water out?
When closed they seal tight against the frame. We also flash the opening properly so wind-driven rain and ground moisture stay outside.
Can hopper windows be an egress exit?
Standard hoppers are usually too small for egress. If you need a code-compliant basement egress window, we can spec one — just ask at the consultation.
