The 45202 blocks downtown mix high-rise condos with older brick townhouses and a growing number of loft conversions. In the low-rise homes the front room usually looks out through a single flat window onto a street wall of masonry across the way, which leaves the space feeling closed in. A bow window opens that up by curving glass outward to draw light from more than one direction and to carve out usable depth where there was only a flat plane.
We bend four or more equal units into a soft arc that suits a townhouse front without shouting, and we engineer the framing and flashing so the projection is carried on an insulated, cabled board. Does a bow window cut street noise in a downtown townhouse?
It helps noticeably. The triple-pane Low-E glass we use puts three layers of glass and two insulating gaps between you and the street, which dampens traffic and sidewalk noise better than the single or double pane most older downtown homes still have. The tight flashing seals the air gaps that let sound leak in around a frame.
What’s the difference between a bay and a bow window?
A bay is three windows — a picture window flanked by two angled units — for a boxier projection. A bow uses four or more equal units curved into a gentle arc. Bays feel bolder; bows feel softer.
Can a bay window replace my old picture window?
Often, yes — it’s a popular upgrade. It does involve exterior work to build the projection and flashing, which we scope and price at the free consultation.
Are bay windows drafty?
Old ones were, usually from poor flashing. We insulate and flash the projection properly and use triple-pane glass, so a new bay seals as tight as any other window.
