Forest Park in 45240 was a master-planned community that went up mostly in the 1960s and 70s, and its ranches and split-levels were designed with wide living-room windows facing the street or the yard. A picture window is the right replacement for those openings because it restores the big, unbroken pane the house was designed around. The original glass, now fifty-plus years old, is usually where seals have failed and drafts have set in.
We put in a single fixed pane of triple-pane Low-E glass with argon fill, framed in slim fusion-welded vinyl so you get more glass and a cleaner sightline than the aging unit had. With no sash or hardware, it is the most energy-efficient window we install, which matters in homes this size where that front window is a big chunk of the wall. The big living-room window in my Forest Park home is drafty. Is a picture window the fix?
For a fixed opening like that, it is the best fix we offer. A new picture window drops a fresh triple-pane argon unit into the same spot with no operating parts, so there is nothing to leak and the seal is airtight. In a room where that window is most of the wall, the comfort difference is easy to feel.
Do picture windows open?
No — they’re fixed, which is what makes them so efficient and gives them the biggest glass area. Pair them with casements or double-hungs alongside if you want ventilation.
Are picture windows more energy efficient?
