Northgate in 45251 filled in largely through the 1970s and 80s with split-levels and colonials on the west side, and many of those family rooms have a wide window that has never been touched since the house was built. That is the ideal spot for a picture window, because the opening is already large and the view of the backyard is what the room is built around. The original units up here are often double-pane at best, with failed seals showing up as fog between the glass.
We replace them with a single fixed pane of triple-pane Low-E glass and argon fill, set in a slim fusion-welded vinyl frame that gives you more glass than the old unit in the same rough opening. With no sash or hardware, it is the most efficient window in our lineup, and the low-profile frame means the view opens right up. If you want ventilation in that room, we can add a casement on each side and keep the big pane in the middle.

My Northgate split-level has a foggy family room window. Can a picture window fix that?
That fog means the seal between the panes has failed, which is common on 40-year-old units. A new fixed picture window with triple-pane argon glass gives you a fresh, sealed unit that will not fog and will hold heat far better. Since it does not open, it is also the tightest replacement you can put in that wall.
Do picture windows open?
No — they’re fixed, which is what makes them so efficient and gives them the biggest glass area. Pair them with casements or double-hungs alongside if you want ventilation.
Are picture windows more energy efficient?
