The 45202 blocks of OTR are packed with 19th-century Italianate and Greek Revival buildings, tall narrow rooms with high ceilings and windows sized to match. In a rehabbed unit where the original tall windows have failed or been boxed in, a picture window restores that vertical sweep of glass and lets the streetlife and the light back in. It suits a corner parlor over a busy stretch of Vine, where you want to watch the street without a sash grille breaking up the view.
We build picture windows to the tall, slim proportions these buildings call for, so the new pane keeps the rhythm of the facade rather than fighting it. The glass is triple-pane Low-E with argon, held in a fusion-welded vinyl frame you can order in a darker color to read right against historic brick. OTR has design rules for the older buildings. Can a picture window still look right on a historic facade?
Yes, as long as we build it to the proportions of the original opening, which is what we do on every job. We can size a tall, narrow picture window to match the historic rhythm and order the frame in a color that sits well against old brick. If your building is in a district with review, we will size and spec the unit to fit those requirements.
Do picture windows open?
No — they’re fixed, which is what makes them so efficient and gives them the biggest glass area. Pair them with casements or double-hungs alongside if you want ventilation.
Are picture windows more energy efficient?
Generally yes. With no operating parts to leak, a triple-pane picture window is the most airtight style we install.
How big can a picture window be?
Quite large — we size them to the wall. For very large openings we may split the glass or add structural mullions, which we’ll cover at the consultation.
